House cleaning alert- Do you know what’s in your bed?

House cleaning alert - Do you know what’s in your bed?

I know this seems like a really strange question to ask, because of course we know what is in our bed.

Or do we?

Did you know that you may be sleeping with anywhere from 100,000 to 10 million dust mites every night? If you’re anything like me, the thought of sleeping with any kind of bug is disgusting. Not only is sleeping with millions of dust mites disgusting, but it just might be affecting your health.

To really try to understand dust mites and their effects, it is important to understand a bit of information about them. A dust mite is a spider-like insect that belongs to the family of eight-legged creatures knows as arachnids. These biological contaminates are almost everywhere and can travel through the air as well as be transported by humans and pets back and forth between bedding, furniture, rugs, places of business and home.

Despite the fact that these critters cannot be seen by the naked eye, they still can be serious health concerns for you and your family.  Dust mites contribute to poor indoor air quality, which can trigger sneezing, allergic reactions, cause rashes, watery eyes, coughing, dizziness and breathing difficulties. It is also believed that children exposed to dust mites can develop lifelong allergies.

Here are some additional facts about dust mites that just might make you think before going to bed tonight.

  • They spread very rapidly and will be found spread in a new mattress as fast as six months after purchase.
  • Dust mites are also the cause of skin allergies and rashes such as eczema, which is dry, itchy skin over all the body.
  • Dust mites draw substance from organic material such as flakes of our skin or dandruff. This is one reason why they tend to flourish in pillows.
  • The weight of the average mattress doubles after ten years due to dust mite infestation, and the weight of the average pillow increases by 10% after just one year.

I could go on and on with facts about dust mites that would further illustrate the problems and dangers associated with them. However, I am pretty sure at this point I’ve pointed out enough information for you to want to get rid of these creepy crawly bugs!  If you have any questions call Total Cleaning Plus to get all your answers.
